Replacing an Ageing Sectional Door with an Insulated Roller Shutter in Nottingham
EVICK replaced an ageing sectional overhead door with a new insulated roller shutter, creating additional headroom, improving natural light and providing a modern, energy-efficient access solution for an industrial warehouse in Nottingham.
Replacing an Ageing Sectional Door with an Insulated Roller Shutter
One of our recent projects involved replacing an ageing sectional overhead door at an industrial warehouse in Nottingham.
Although the door was only used occasionally, it had become an ageing asset that was becoming increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain. The customer wanted a modern, reliable replacement while making better use of the available building space.
Following a site survey, our engineers recommended replacing the existing sectional door with an insulated industrial roller shutter.
Understanding the Customer's Requirements
Unlike many loading bay doors, this entrance wasn't used continuously throughout the day. However, the customer still required unrestricted access whenever the opening was needed.
The existing sectional door travelled upwards into the roof space whenever it opened. This created two problems:
- It reduced the available headroom above the opening.
- It blocked the only roof light in that part of the building whenever the door was open.
Although these issues had been accepted for many years, replacing the ageing door gave the customer an opportunity to improve the overall working environment rather than simply replacing like-for-like.
Why an Insulated Roller Shutter?
After discussing the site's operational requirements, an insulated roller shutter was identified as the most suitable solution.
Unlike a sectional door, the roller shutter coils neatly above the opening within a compact barrel, leaving the roof space completely unobstructed.
This immediately created additional overhead clearance while allowing natural daylight from the roof light to reach the working area once again.
The insulated lath construction also provides improved thermal performance compared with an older single-skin door, helping the building retain heat during colder months and contributing to a more comfortable working environment.
Scope of Works
The project included:
- Safe removal of the existing sectional overhead door
- Disposal of the old equipment
- Supply of a new insulated roller shutter door
- Installation of new guide rails and barrel assembly
- New motor and control equipment
- Full commissioning and safety testing
- Operator demonstration and handover
All work was completed with minimal disruption to the customer's daily operations.
Project Outcome
The completed installation delivered several practical benefits for the customer.
Increased Headroom
Removing the sectional door mechanism freed up valuable overhead space, allowing the customer to make much better use of the building.
Improved Natural Light
Because the roller shutter rolls into a compact barrel above the opening, the roof light is no longer obstructed when the door is open, allowing significantly more daylight into the work area.
Improved Thermal Performance
The insulated lath construction helps reduce heat loss through the opening, improving energy efficiency while maintaining a more consistent internal temperature.
Reliable Modern Equipment
Replacing an ageing asset with a modern door system reduces future maintenance requirements and provides dependable operation whenever access is needed.
Looking to Upgrade an Existing Industrial Door?
Replacing an old industrial door isn't always about installing a direct replacement. By understanding how a building operates, it's often possible to improve the working environment at the same time.
Whether you need to replace an ageing sectional door, upgrade to an insulated roller shutter, or modernise your loading bay equipment, EVICK can provide practical advice, professional installation and ongoing maintenance support throughout Nottingham and across the UK.
